Teaching Practice
Since 2018 Brian has maintained an adjunct teaching practice. During that time he has had the opportunity to teach Portfolio, Typography, and Critical Issues for Pratt, the City College of New York, the New York City College of Technology, and Fordham University. Additionally, Brian has experience as a guest speaker and critic.
Brian teaches Critical Issues for CCNY every semester. The course is part of the Electronic Design and Multimedia program’s core curriculm. The following principles constitute the course’s key concepts: 1) True authority comes from knowledge of self. 2) The literary arts are often framed as paths to self knowledge. The visual arts are also paths to self knowledge. 3) Artists have a social responsibility to speak the truth via their work. 4) The true purpose of systemic oppression is to distract artists from speaking the truth via their work in service of greed. 5) Artists do not need permission or approval to make their work e.g. writing a novel makes someone a novelist, not publishing one. 6) Design is not about making things look nice, it is about helping things to look like themselves—a natural vehicle for self-actualization. 7) Designers have a social responsibility to factor ethics into their ambitions. 8) The design industry needs a diverse range of designers to share their voices in addition to their work. 9) Technology is fundamentally unstable—expect design tools to change. 10) Fear and doubt can be indicators that you’ve risked enough of yourself on the page.
